Our number 1 Priority

Our number 1 priority here at Holiday Aquatics has to be the Welfare of Animals.

Although we can’t enforce any rules upon our customers we do the next best thing and give them access to quality information regarding any set up of new tanks.

All our material is provided by OATA through their website so you know the information is from a reliable source.

All we ask of our customers is they read, read and read more before taking the plunge into Fish keeping, were not saying always think big but instead think about what you want and what can be achieved with your purchase or what you are looking to purchase.

For Aquariums we would suggest not going too big but getting something manageable. Once you have your sparkly new tank now its time to get things started. Start slow and let things settle make sure you have cycled your tank, don’t rush into buying fish.

For Ponds we would suggest the opposite and think big, it’s a lot more difficult in changing a pond than it is an aquarium. Always go for as big as you can fit and try and go deep, the deeper the better as this will help keep your fish warm during the winter months. Think about safety of you and others when thinking of where your ponds going to be. Also consider shade for your fish, a shaded pond will also have the benefit of reduced algae blooms. We would suggest always planning for a UV Filter, not only will it help in controlling diseases but it will help in reducing algae blooms.

As your tank or pond is cycling, why not read up on fish behaviours, how many fish will fit in your tank / pond and what each fish would grow to and what fish is compatible with what. Theres nothing worse in getting two species of fish that just chase each other round the tank 24/7 stressing each other out or if you have a Marine buying a fish that’s not compatible with corals and then the fish starts nipping at the coral stressing it out.

If in doubt ask from purchasing your hardware to purchasing your livestock, fish keeping should be enjoyable and if you do it right it will be and it will bring you hours hopefully years of joy !

You can find the OATA reading documents here : http://www.holidayaquatics.com/starting-up-an-aquarium-or-pond-13-w.asp

I think the background and editing pulls the web page to the front but also breaks up all the white with the nice under the ocean picture, why not let us know what you think ?

New lights Category added

We have just added a few lights to our categorys for Tropical and Marine.

Some nice TMC LED lights suitable for Nano tanks or in multiples for larger tanks.

Hopefully in the next few weeks we should be adding more LED lights.

Why LED, well LED's are the way forward we must accept that and why shouldn't we the initial cost might be high but the saving of electricity far outways the initial cost. Just look at our home lights they are all changing to LED, why to save you money and the environment !

Check out the range : http://www.holidayaquatics.com/tropical--lighting-59-c.asp

About us and our fishkeeping history

Here at Holiday Aquatics we have been in the fish keeping world for around 20 years.

Starting with tropical fish we soon got the bug and expanded to include breeding Kribs, Guppies, Mollies and later the more adventurous Discus.

After 6 years we turned our hands to Marines, joining the amazing circle of Reef keeping. We had some great local knowledge at hand and even had the chance to meet Julian Sprung and Bob Goemans. Still keeping Marines 3 years on, we turned our hands to keeping Koi Carp.

Our filteration system for the Koi pond was all DIY, based on our experience of Marine keeping and we had great success with having great water quaility, never having any issues with out of control algae. We had around a dozen Koi that grew from only being around 3" to over 12"+  within a couple of years, they were our new pride and joy and we had one or two Champion quality Koi.

Unfortunately after a further 5 years we had to move premises which resulted in us having to give pond keeping up, however we still kept our Marine systems and to this day we are still avid Marine keepers.

Holiday Aquatics started in 2012 looking after customers aquariums and Ponds which we still do to this day, residential and business while customers are away on Holiday or if they are just wanting that helping hand : www.holidayaquatics.co.uk

Its good to meet new Fishkeepers and learn from their experiences and find out what their Journey has been in this amazing hobby.

In 2012 we also started our Online retail shop www.holidayaquatics.com

The aim of our online store is to reasure our customers that we are true fishkeepers and to offer just what you need to make the hobby affordable and enjoyable, we are not a huge online retailer trying to make huge profits and take away your hard earned cash.

If i was to give any advice from my fishkeeping history, i would say feed your fish and corals often with good quality foods, frozen foods although natural don't have the nutritional needs a fish needs so feed a top quality flake or pallet that has plenty of vitamins and next keep your water parameters as good as you can get them. You get these two things right and your livestock will look after themselves as they have done in the wild for millions of years.

Hopefully our fishkeeping journey will not end and hope that we can grow and grow and pass on great savings and great advice.

If you have got this far.... then thankyou for reading and good luck with your fishkeeping journey :)
